The Internet Society at IGF 2025 in Norway (The Who, What, When, Where, and Why)

How the Internet is managed—its governance model—has a direct impact on how it is used, evolves, and on users’ daily life. We believe that the best way to do it is through an inclusive collaboration model (the multistakeholder model), and the Internet Governance Forum is one of the main global platforms where that governance is practiced. As IGF comes to its 20th edition, the last of its mandate, a sense of urgency arises as we approach a critical time towards the World Summit on the Information Society 20-year review (WSIS+20) that will take place later this year.

Our staff and members of our community will attend the Internet Governance Forum in Lillestrøm, Norway, from 23–27 June 2025, to engage with like-minded actors and have open conversations and discussions with partners to defend the multistakeholder approach, advance a forward-looking vision, and demonstrate the benefits of collaboration.

We have long supported the global IGF and the many national and regional IGF events. We believe that the opportunities we can create by bringing together diverse stakeholders around common themes can help us combat the threats the Internet faces today and keep advancing our vision of making the Internet for everyone.

Why (We Are Going)

  • To sustain the Internet’s value for our future, we must recognize and protect what makes it unique—the open, collaborative model that has helped the Internet grow and flourish.
  • To persist in our work to connect the billions of people who remain unconnected.
  • To give decision-makers the information they need to make the right choices through a continued and better multistakeholder Internet governance model.
  • To empower new generations of Internet champions.

Who (Is Going)

Internet Society Foundation managing director Chris Locke will head up our delegation of Internet Society and Internet Society Foundation staff. We will be joined by many members of our community, including organization members, chapter leaders and members, youth ambassadors, and members of our alumni network. Members of our Internet Society Norway Chapter, in particular, will be actively engaged and will share a booth with us.

What (We Will Be Doing)

We will be taking part in 13 sessions over the course of the week at IGF. In roundtable discussions, panels, and workshops, we’ll cover topics ranging from multistakeholder governance and Internet governance to community-centered connectivity and securing basic Internet infrastructure. See a full list of our activities with links to session descriptions.

When we’re not taking part in sessions, we’ll be interacting with the IGF attendees at our booth. “On-the-floor” discussions are a critical component of the IGF and are why diverse attendance is so important. Being able to discuss the information shared at sessions and future plans with a variety of stakeholders in real time is invaluable to the process of coming to mutual agreements and creating a shared vision of success.

When and Where (We Will Be)

23–25 June 2025 in Lillestrøm, Norway.

These are just some of the activities we’ll organize or participate in. Come see us in our booth, where you’ll find a lot of information and engage with us and members of our community.
