Kilima: Highlights from ISOC Africa – September 2019


African School on Internet Governance (AfriSIG)

The Seventh African School on Internet Governance (AfriSIG) was held from 4-9 September 2019 in N’Djamena, Chad, with the aim of promoting and strengthening active multi-stakeholder participation in Internet governance in the African continent. For six days, 45 participants from 23 countries gathered at sessions, lectures and workshops on Internet governance processes at the local, national, sub-regional, regional and global levels. The Internet Society was a partner and facilitated some sessions.

Africa Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF)

The Government of Chad in collaboration with the African Union Commission (AUC) successfully hosted the 8th Meeting of the AIGF in N’Djamena, Chad, from 10-12 September 2019. The Internet Society Africa Regional Bureau (ARB) participated to the event and organized 3 sessions namely, on Community Networks awareness session, exploring emerging technologies and [email protected] 2019. FIFAfrica 2019

The Network for Digital Rights in Ethiopia (NDRE) was formally launched on 26 September 2019 during FIFAfrica 2019 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This is the first working group that NDRE has launched is the Prevention of Internet Shutdowns in Ethiopia. NDRE will also work on organizing an MS process for the revision of the Ethiopian Computer Crime Proclamation. 

During FIFAfrica 2019, the Internet Society in collaboration with NDRE and Access Now also organized an MS workshop on 25 September 2019 on the revision of the Ethiopian Computer Crime Proclamation.

14th Annual Session of Global Forum on Human Settlements

The ARB attended the 14th Annual Session of Global Forum on Human Settlements which took place from September 5-6 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Bureau took the opportunity to make a presentation on IoT security.

Governance and sustainability training for Community Networks (CNs)

Training was conducted for 20 representatives from Lanet-Umoja in Nakuru, Kenya on governance and sustainability for their new CN in formation. The CN project is led by AfCHIX under a USAID grant.

Online course

Review of new online course structure with moderators from the Africa region and beyond was conducted to make improvements and adjustments for the next set of trainings for the rest of 2019.

Building and strengthening our Community: Chapter’s Update

[email protected] IGF 2019: The Internet Society organized a networking event at the 2019 AfIGF in N’Djamena, Chad on 11 September 2019. 85+ Internet Society members attended the event. Moreover, as part of the effort to support the next generation of Internet Leaders, the Internet Society sponsored the 1st Youth Africa IGF in N’Djamena.

IGF Youth Ambassadors 2019: 7 African community members have been selected as part of the 2019 Internet Society IGF Youth Ambassadors.

ISOC Guinea Chapter: Successfully organized a training workshop on the Multistakeholder Approach and Internet Governance from 4-6 September 2019.

ISOC Madagascar Chapter: Partnered with NIC.MG and other local Internet development stakeholders to organize the very 1st edition the Madagascar National IGF.

Q3 Quarterly Community Engagement online calls: Took place on 2 and 3 October 2019 with African Chapters and members. The meetings were an opportunity to share Internet Society’s updates among African community and discuss Internet Society’s 2020 projects.

As part of the overall effort to build and strengthen relationships with chapters, the community engagement manager for Africa paid working visits to:

  • ISOC Chad chapter from 8-13 September 2019 alongside the 2019 AfIGF. The visit was an opportunity to discuss the Chapter’s opportunities and challenges and better ways of collaboration with the Internet Society in 2020 and beyond.
  • ISOC Mali Chapter from 18-21 September 2019 alongside an Internet Governance Training Workshop organized by the chapter in partnership with AGETIC and CACTIC. The meeting was an opportunity to visit the Chapter’s project funded by ISOC Foundation Beyond the Net Funding Program and help reconnect the founding members of the chapter and the current leadership.
  • ISOC Morocco Chapter from 26-28 September, 2019 alongside North Africa Internet Governance sponsored by the Internet Society. This visit was an occasion to discuss the chapter’s opportunities and challenges and better ways of collaboration in 2020 and beyond. It also helped to evaluate the chapter’s project funded by the Internet Society Foundation through the Beyond the Net Funding Program.
