Capacity building to promote Interconnection in Equatorial Guinea

By Betel HailuManager, Organization Members Engagement

This week, the Internet Society is undertaking a 4-day Best Practices and Technical Capacity Building workshop in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea in partnership with the Ministry of Transport, Technology and Post and Telecommunication (MTTCT). The workshop is part of the African Union AXIS project and Internet Society’s efforts to promote access, connectivity and infrastructure work to support the growth of IXPs across Africa.

His Excellency Mr. Celestino-Bonifacio Bacale Obiang, Minister of MTTCT and a number of officials from the Ministry honored the opening session of the workshop. More than 27 participants from other Ministries such as Information and Press and representatives from main mobile network operators, the regulator (ORTEL) and the three operators in Equatorial Guinea (MUNI, GETESA and GECOMSA) are attending the workshop.

The first one and half days of the workshop will focus at providing participants with the required knowledge to enhance their understanding of the benefits of IXPs as well as reinforce their awareness on the establishment and management of an Internet Exchange Point.

The remaining two and half days will be dedicated to teach the participants the technical skills needed to maximize their benefits from local and regional interconnections at IXPs. The technical training will incorporate a hands-on lab, which will help the participants familiarize themselves with interconnection technologies and techniques deployed on their networks. These technologies and techniques increase overall Internet experience and resilience by promoting the efficiency of network interconnections, and traffic exchanged at the IXPs.
