ITU CWG on WSIS

CWG Statement (June 10, 2013)

As a point of reflection and as the Council will start working towards shaping the high level event next year in Sharm El Sheik, we would like to make a brief comment.

The Internet Society would like to congratulate the ITU for organising the various meetings relating to WSIS, including the WSIS+10 Forum as well as the WSIS+10 Visioning Track.

We also consider the WTPF a very successful meeting, marked by a spirit of openness and inclusiveness.

We suggest building on ITU Secretary’s General Toure’s promise at the closure of the WTPF to ask Member States of the ITU Council to open the Council Working Group on Internet Policy and suggest doing the same with regards the Council Working Group on WSIS, opening up the participation to all stakeholders. Experience has clearly shown that multistakeholder participation is beneficial to all parties.

The Internet Society supports the request recently expressed in a letter by leaders of the Civil Society to open the relevant Council Working Group meetings; we encourage multistakeholder participation structures for all Internet governance discussions
