Fellowships foster technical leadership and provide experiences working with the IETF community
[Washington, D.C. and Geneva, Switzerland] — The Internet Society today announced that it has awarded new and returning fellowships to 15 engineers to attend the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) meeting held March 10-15 in Orlando, Florida.
The Internet Society is the organizational home of the IETF, the primary body responsible for the Internet’s core standards and protocols that represents an international community of network designers, operators, vendors, and researchers. The Internet Society awards fellowships to support the participation of technologists from developing and emerging economies in the IETF meetings. The programme pairs first-time fellows with an experienced mentor at IETF meetings to support their participation.

The first-time Internet Society Fellows for IETF 86 are:
Waqar Azeem (Pakistan) recently joined i2c Inc. as System/Storage Administrator. Previously, he worked in a similar capacity at his alma mater, University of Engineering and Technology in Lahore Pakistan, overseeing video conferencing and the data center. Waqar was also a research associate in the Center for Language Engineering (CLE), Al-Khawarizmi Institute of Computer Science UET in Lahore, Pakistan. He is involved in the development of the dot Pakistan IDN ccTLD test-bed and policy framework.
Javier Contreras (Venezuela) has nearly 10 years of experience in the design and administration of TCP/IP networks, and has been responsible for the development and operation of network infrastructure at the Universidad de Los Andes. Part of his experience was achieved by the development of TCP/IP multiservice networks for public and private institutions in the country through the Corporacion Parque Tecnológico de Mérida.
Ardiansyah Musa Efendi (Indonesia) graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of Indonesia, Engineering Faculty, majoring in Computer Engineering. He was recently awarded a research scholarship to continue his study in the Master Degree School of Electronics and Computer Engineering, Chonnam National University, South Korea. Ardiansyah is also interested in the fields of ubiquitous computing and advanced networks, knowledge-sharing, and online teaching. In IETF, he follows the IETF Routing over Low power & Lossy Network (ROLL) Working Group and IPv6 over Low power WPAN (6LoWPAN) Working Group.
Behnam Esfahbod (Iran) has participated in previous IETF meetings remotely and IETF 86 will be his first attendance in person. He is interested in the Applications Area working groups, focusing on internationalization standards (e.g., IDN, EAI, and PRECIS) and their usability and security issues. Behnam worked with IRNIC, the .IR ccTLD Registry from 2006 to 2010, and is currently active in Unicode/CLDR standards, font development projects, and open-source text rendering engines.
Hasan Farooq (Pakistan) is working on his Masters by research in Networking domain in Malaysia. His field of research is wireless communications with a focus on mesh routing protocols. Hasan’s work is focused on developing a specialized wireless mesh routing protocol for smart metering infrastructures. He follows the IETF MANET Working Group.
Luiz Julião Braga Filho (Brazil) has a background in mathematics and logistics, MSc in Computing Theory at PUC / RJ, and an MBA in Project Management (Q1 2013). He is currently an independent consultant in the area of Internet infrastructure. He was president of TeleSA Telecommunications SA, director of Pegasus Telecom, director of the Computer Data Center at Federal University of Viçosa, and executive director of the Computer Data Center at University of Mato Grosso.
Luis Goncalves (Venezuela) is interested in the v6ops and mpls working groups. He is an Engineering Manager working for an ISP. He has 10 years of experience in the business side of the Internet. Luis is interested in Internet globalization and improving bandwidth access to Venezuela.
María Inés Robles (Argentina) is currently a researcher at the University Technological National in Argentina and is interested in 6LowPAN/RPL with plans for a PhD in this area.
Tauqeer Safdar (Pakistan) is a PhD student at University Technology Petronas, Malaysia, and is currently working in the area of routing and security in Cognitive Radio Ad-Hoc Networks.
Yhioshira Valdez (Venezuela) has more than nine years of experience working as an applications and business consultant for national and international energy, banking, transportation, and telecommunication clients. She is interested in exploring everything related to internationalization standards and security issues. Yhioshira’s primary areas of interest are InterNetworks, IPv6, and Trust and Identity.
The Returning Fellows for the 86th IETF meeting are:
Palanivelan Appanasamy (India) is a Principal Software Engineer with EMC Software Systems India. He has a background in both telecom and datacom, with a focus on routing, failure detection, and security. He also has an interest in innovative design ideas and looks at the IETF engagement as an opportunity to hone relevant skills and contribute.
Fernando Gont (Argentina) is currently working as a security consultant and researcher for SI6 Networks (http://www.si6networks.com). Additionally, he is a member of the Centro de Estudios de Informatica (CEDI) at Universidad Tecnológica Nacional/Facultad Regional Haedo (UTN/FRH) of Argentina, where he works in the field of Internet engineering. As part of his work, he is active in several working groups of the IETF, and has published a number of IETF RFCs (Request for Comments) and Internet-Drafts. He is also a member of the Transport Directorate of the IETF.
Faisal Hasan (Bangladesh) works as an associate professor of CSE at the University of Dhaka. Faisal’s research interest is congestion control on the Internet, and he has received a PhD from the University of Otago. He is also the President of the Internet Society Bangladesh Dhaka Chapter.
Subramanian Moonesamy (Mauritius) is interested in mail, HTTP, WebSocket, DNS, and several other protocols. He follows working groups in the IETF Applications area.
Zartash Uzmi (Pakistan) comes from academia, based at LUMS University, Pakistan. For many years, he has been working on various problems in the networking and communications area. Zartash’s most recent interests are data center networking, scalable routing, and cost-effective network operations.
The Internet Society Fellowships to the IETF in 2013 are made possible by donations from Internet Society Organization Members Afilias, Google, Microsoft, SIDN, and Verisign. Since its inception in 2006, this programme has made 170 awards to technologists from more than 42 developing countries to participate in IETF meetings.
