Fellowships presented to 16 skilled technologists from the developing world to gain experience working on Internet standards development with the IETF community
[Washington, D.C. and Geneva, Switzerland] — The Internet Society today announced that it has awarded new and returning fellowships to 16 talented engineers to attend the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) meeting being held 28 July – 02 August in Berlin, Germany.
The IETF is the Internet’s premier technical standards body, and represents an open international community of network designers, engineers, operators, vendors, and researchers concerned with the evolution of the Internet architecture and the smooth operation of the Internet. The Internet Society is the organizational home of the IETF. The Internet Society awards fellowships to enable technologists from developing and emerging economies to participate in the IETF meetings, and experience Internet standards development in person. First-time fellows are paired with an experienced mentor to support their participation.

The first-time Internet Society Fellows to IETF 87 are:
Graham Beneke (South Africa) is from Johannesburg and a network engineer at Neology where he builds and supports IP Ethernet networks for a number of ISPs and operators in Southern and Eastern Africa. He is active in South Africa's ISP Association (ISPA) where he chairs the INX working group (WG), which operates the JINX, CINX and DINX Internet exchanges. He is also chair of the Antispam WG and deals with security and abuse.
Fawaz Bokhari (Pakistan) from Lahore is an Assistant Professor at the Punjab University College of Information Technology (P.U.C.I.T). His research interests include computer networks and distributed and cloud computing. Currently, he is working on designing efficient communication protocols (transport and network layer) for data centers. He also teaches an introductory level cloud computing course to graduate students.
Jorge González (Venezuela) works at Universidad Centroccidental Lisandro Alvarado in the data network and system department. He is interested in the 6man and v6ops WG, and he hopes to use the experience to share with coworkers and students at the University.
Maureen Hernandez (Venezuela) is currently a Systems Engineering student at University of Los Andes. She is very interested in transport layer security and web security.
Adib M. Monzer Habbal (Syria) is currently with the InterNetWorks Research Lab at the School of Computing, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), as a Doctoral Researcher, and is a lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at the School of Computing. He is interested in the Transport Area WG and Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (manet).
Violet Njuguna (Kenya) works as a Senior Solutions Architect at Safaricom in Nairobi, dealing with infrastructure and connectivity. Her interests are in operations and management, real time applications and infrastructure, and routing and transport areas. More specifically, v6ops, behave, MPLS, sipcore, and DNSops.
Encel Sanchez (Venezuela) is a student at the University of The Andes – Merida, Venezuela. He is currently studying Systems Engineering. He is interested on TCP, IPv6, and also IP mobility, HTTPS, and Web security.
Marcos Siqueira (Brazil) is a PhD student at Unicamp and network researcher at CPqD – Telecom R&D Center. His main activities are related to IP/Optical communications, including control plane, future network architectures, and cross-layer issues.
Mirko Suznjevic (Croatia) is a senior researcher at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing. He is currently employed on the ACROSS project funded by the EU FP7 program. His main research interests and activities are in the area of traffic analysis and modeling of networked games, especially Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games. He has focused his research in the areas of Quality of Experience for online games and bandwidth utilization optimization.
Wasif Hussain Syed (Pakistan) manages a network operations center (NOC) of a wireless ISP. He recently attended APNIC-34 in Cambodia and was very interested in attending the IETF-87 meeting to further his work. He is following PCN and CONEX and his main areas of interest are network performance management, future Internet architecture, and congestion mitigation.
Jose Torres (Venezuela) is a professor of Universidad de los Andes located in Merida, Venezuela. He is an electrical engineer and about to finish his Masters in Computer Science. He is a workshop instructor for Latin America and the Caribbean Workshop for Latin America and the Caribbean (WALC).
The Returning Fellows for the 87th IETF meeting are:
Paventhan Arumugam (India) heads the R&D projects at ERNET in Bangalore, where they have been utilizing some of the protocols developed at IETF such as 6lowpan, CoAP, and dual stack mobile IPv6 in their research projects. He is also working on the development of cloud computing services for school education. He is interested in the 6lowpan, core, roll, scim, alto, and cdni Working Groups.
Sandra Céspedes (Colombia) is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Information and Communications Technology at Icesi University in Cali. She recently finished her PhD degree from the University of Waterloo (Canada) on the topic of IP mobility in multi-hop vehicular communications networks. Currently, she is following the 6LoWPAN, NetEXT, and ROLL WG, and recently co-authored an RFC (6971) relating to forwarding in unreliable networks.
Raitme Citterio (Venezuela) is a computer engineer and graduate from UCLA – University Lisandro Alvarado. His specialty is management and development of knowledge and learning communities online. As a consultant in the area of elearning, he works on issues of regional leadership and building capacity for the region. He is a member of the Royal Venezuela – Graduates of training programs in Latin America-Caribbean international cooperation programs of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
Vinayak Hedge (India) is currently working with Inmobi. He participates in IPPM, PMOL, CDNI and HTTP-bis groups. He also follows the Transport Area and Application areas. He is part of the PMOL directorate, which reviews drafts from transport and application areas regularly for performance considerations.
Muhammad Maaz Rehan (Pakistan) is a returning fellow originally from Pakistan, currently working on a PhD (Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks) from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia. He is interested in the manet working group.
The Internet Society Fellowships to the IETF in 2013 are made possible by funding from Internet Society Organization Members Afilias, Google, Microsoft, SIDN, and Verisign. Since its inception in 2006, this programme has made 200 awards to technologists from more than 40 developing countries to participate in IETF meetings.
