Technology in Government in Africa (TIGA) awards

The Internet Society congratulates the winners of the 2009 Technology in Government in Africa (TIGA) awards presented by the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the Canada Fund for Africa, in collaboration with the Government of Finland.

The TIGA programme publicly recognises innovation, excellence, and leadership in Africa’s public sector e-government development. The TIGA Award is a biannual event to honour African Governments and institutions.

Dr. Dawit Bekele, Regional Bureau Manager for Africa, and Christine Runnegar, Public Policy Manager, attended the awards ceremony at the Sheraton Hotel in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 30 April 2009.

The Internet Society is particularly honoured that Dr. Bekele was selected by ECA to be one of the panel judges for these awards.

There were 5 categories of awards:

Public service delivery to citizens/communities
Improved health services through the use of ICTs
Improved educational services through the use of ICTs
Public-Private Partnership in economic and financial eServices delivery
The Judges’ Award
The 12 winners were drawn from South Africa, Botswana, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Sudan, Angola, Mozambique, and Mali. These projects were distinguished by their innovative use of technology to solve local problems of their respective governments.
