About the Internet Society
Board of Trustees
The Internet Society is governed by a Board of Trustees composed of up to 17 members. There are currently 14 trustees worldwide, including the current President and CEO, who serves in an ex officio (non-voting) role.
The membership of the Board of Trustees includes:
- Four members elected by Internet Society chapters
- Four members elected by Internet Society organization members
- Four members appointed from the Internet Engineering Task Force
- Up to four members appointed by the Board of Trustees
The Role of the Board
The board provides strategic direction, oversight, inspiration, and advice in support of the Internet Society’s mission and vision. The board’s role is strictly limited to governance, ensuring the strong oversight of the organization. In consultation with the CEO, the board sets up strategic goals and helps devise a high-level strategic action plan to reach them. Once the goals and plans are approved, the board oversees management’s implementation and measures results of the actions taken in accordance with the plan.
Additionally, the board also appoints the Public Interest Registry (PIR) Board of Directors. The Internet Society Foundation is governed by a Board of Trustees composed of the current members of the Internet Society Board of Trustees.
