Highlights from ISOC Africa – December 2018

Activities

African Union Commission Workshop on Online Privacy and Personal Data Protection in Africa

From 17-18 December 2018, the African Union Commission (AUC) held a workshop in Addis Ababa on Online Privacy and Personal Data Protection for member states to explore challenges and opportunities of processing personal data in Africa and its impact on the development of Internet economy. The workshop focused on raising awareness among the African Governments / Businesses and Civil Society Organizations on the challenges related to the sustainable and responsible use of personal data. The workshop further highlighted the urgent need for African countries to develop a consistent approach on data governance through establishing a National Data Protection Authority to sustain trust and confidence in its national cyberspace. The AUC – ISOC Africa Personal Data Protection Guidelines was used as baseline document for most discussions. 

Central African IGF in Brazzaville

The ARB participated to the Central African IGF in Congo Brazzaville from 13- 14 December 2018.  The objective of the meeting was mainly to promote and consolidate the national initiatives of Central African countries on the issues of governance. On the occasion Dawit Bekele, Chef Regional Bureau for Africa met with the Director General of the ARCPE (Congolese regulator).

Promoting Internet of opportunities in Ethiopia
  • Dawit Bekele met with the Deputy Director of the Information Network Security Agency of Ethiopia as well as the Minister and State Minister of Innovation and Technology of Ethiopia to discuss the opportunities of bringing together all stakeholders to start the discussion on major issues around the Internet in Ethiopia.
  • The ARB submitted a proposal to create working groups to Improve Access, E-economy, Privacy and contribution of Human Rights on the Internet in Ethiopia.

The Network Monitoring Course that was run in both English and French has been concluded for the year 2018.

 ISOC Benin Chapter: Congratulations for winning the ISOC Chapterthon 2018!

ARB: Organized two webinar sessions on 5 and 6 December to provide African chapter leaders with Basic knowledge and tips for a strategic use of Social media.

ISOC Kenya Chapter: Successfully organized its 2018 Annual General Meeting and elections.

ISOC Chad Chapter: Celebrated from 27-29 December 2018 its 10th anniversary with a series of activities that included an Internet training workshop for women and the 2018 Chad National Internet Fair

ISOC Zimbabwe Chapter: Organized on 6 December 2018 a MeetUp to discuss the opportunities and challenges of IoT for Zimbabwe and Africa.

ISOC Togo Chapter: Convened on 6 December the 2018 edition of the Togo National IGF under the main theme of “meaningful Internet access and trust”.

ISOC Tanzania Chapter: Organized from 6-7 December 2018 the first community networks and community radio workshop in Tanzania. The objective of the workshop was to promote the creation and growth of Community Networks and Community Radio thereby increasing collaboration among operators working in these areas in Tanzania. ISOC Botswana Chapter: Organized an IoT seminar on 13 December 2018 to discuss the opportunities and challenges of IoT for Botswana. More at: https://livestream.com/internetsociety/botswanaiot

ISOC South Africa Gauteng Chapter: Organized on 14 December 2018 a Community Networks awareness and training for rural areas of South Africa.
