Multi-stakeholder engagement is essential to ensure the stability, security, and future growth of the open Internet
[Geneva, Switzerland] – This week, the Internet Society will be participating in the 2013 ITU World Telecommunication/ICT Policy Forum (WTPF) in Geneva, Switzerland. During the WTPF, ITU Member States, Sector Members, and others will consider some of the most important issues facing the future of the Internet, including how to expand access to the Internet, how to encourage further deployment of technologies such as Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), and how to ensure that the dialogue is as inclusive as possible.
The Internet Society is a global, nonprofit organization dedicated to an open Internet for everyone. The Internet Society is a strong advocate of the multi-stakeholder model of Internet governance because it is the heart of the Internet’s architectural foundation and has proven to be the best way to ensure that the benefits of the Internet are available to all. Experience shows that public policy processes that draw from a base of community expertise are most effective in creating the environment in which Internet development and access can flourish.
Lynn St. Amour, Internet Society President and Chief Executive Officer, commented, “The Internet Society looks forward to the discussions at WTPF this week and we continue to be committed to working with all stakeholders to best address the issues associated with international Internet public policy. Approaches that fully engage all stakeholders are the best way to make lasting progress on the important challenges impacting the Internet, not only for the 2.5 billion people online today but for the billions yet to come online.”
The Internet Society submitted comments to the ITU that address critical topics to be discussed at the WTPF and provides background resources for Member States, Sector Members, and others participating in the WTPF. The document focuses on several key areas, including the significant role of Internet exchange points as a means of enhancing Internet connectivity, the need for timely deployment of IPv6, and the importance of the multi-stakeholder model of Internet governance.
