INET New York will initiate a discussion on the new Copyright Alert System (CAS) aimed at warning Internet users about illegally downloaded content
[Washington, D.C. and Geneva, Switzerland] — The Internet Society, in collaboration with its New York Chapter, will host a half-day discussion forum on November 15, which will address the Center for Copyright Information's (CCI) new Copyright Alert System (CAS). The INET New York, held at the New York Law School, will feature two panel discussions and will conclude with a wrap-up multi-stakeholder session. The event will seek to provide information and exchange ideas regarding the operation of CAS, its strengths, weaknesses, and the challenges that lie ahead.
The CAS, designed to provide warnings to Internet users who illegally download copyrighted content over peer-to-peer file sharing networks, was formed as a collaborative effort between U.S. content creators and five leading Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Internet users will receive a graduated set of six warnings from their ISP, if the downloading persists.
The CCI mechanism, based on self-regulation paradigms, has an underlying rationale similar to other initiatives and copyright policy responses around the world. The Internet Society, bringing together for the first time several representatives and members of the CCI along with a broad range of industry organizations and public interest advocates, hopes to initiate a robust dialogue regarding the effectiveness of this new mechanism.
