Deploy360 Provides Resources to Speed the Deployment of IPv6, DNSSEC

 

New Internet Society programme supports the implementation of key Internet technologies

[Washington, D.C. USA and Geneva, Switzerland – 05 January 2012] – The Internet Society today announced the launch of Deploy360, an online resource to support the deployment of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), Domain Name System Security (DNSSEC), and other key Internet technologies. Deploy360 serves as a go-to information source to assist network operators, developers, content providers, consumer electronics manufacturers, and enterprise customers with the implementation of new Internet technologies and standards.

Components of the new Deploy360 Programme include:

  • A growing web portal with hands-on technical resources and educational articles, operational best practices, case studies, and in-depth deployment information
  • Four ION Conferences each year to bring together network engineers and leading industry experts
  • Social media interactions to encourage year-round deployment discussions
  • Speaking engagements at technical industry conferences and events around the globe, including a tutorial on IPv6 in conjunction with the Consumer Electronics Show

Initially, Deploy360 will focus on IPv6 and DNSSEC deployments, which are vital to ensuring the open development, evolution, and use of the Internet for the benefit of people throughout the world.

IPv6 is the next generation Internet Protocol (IP) address standard intended to supplement and eventually replace IPv4, the protocol most Internet services use today. Major Internet industry players must take action to ensure a successful transition, including offering IPv6 connectivity to users, providing services over the IPv6 network, and updating software and firmware. While the technical foundations of IPv6 are well established, significant work remains to deploy IPv6 across the globe.

“2012 will be a pivotal year in IPv6 service deployment, and the Deploy360 Programme is a key component of our efforts to support the industry in making that transition,” said Leslie Daigle, Chief Internet Technology Officer for the Internet Society.

The Domain Name System (DNS) translates domain names humans can remember (e.g., www.example.com) into the IP addresses computers use to identify each other (e.g., 198.51.100.14). Originally designed without any security, DNS has since become vulnerable to spoofing and other malicious attacks. DNS Security (DNSSEC) helps ensure that a domain name typed into a browser delivers the intended IP address by verifying response data. DNSSEC provides a building block for providing additional data security. DNSSEC is slowly gaining momentum, but there is still much work to be done.

“Deploy360 provides easy access to a growing inventory of detailed, practical documents on IPv6 and DNSSEC deployment,” said Richard Jimmerson, who leads the Internet Society Deploy360 Programme. “With support and guidance from the Internet community, we will continue to augment the programme’s educational resources and expand its scope of information. Deploy360 provides the right resources at the right time to help speed the worldwide adoption of essential new Internet standards and technologies.”
