Internet Society’s Contribution to the Second Open Consultations and MAG Meeting

Over the past two decades, the WSIS vision has shaped much of the global digital agenda. But the upcoming WSIS+20 review isn’t just procedural; it’s a defining moment for the future of the Internet and its governance. With a geopolitical landscape that makes cooperation more complex—but also more necessary—the decisions made during the review will echo globally, impacting whether the Internet remains a lifeline for empowerment and connection.

During this process, we must actively defend the WSIS core principles of technology neutrality and the proven effectiveness of the multistakeholder model. We must also insist that initiatives like the Global Digital Compact strengthen, not redefine, the WSIS framework.

It is in this context that the IGF’s irreplaceable role stands out. More than a space for discussion, the IGF is the engine room where the multistakeholder model proves its worth. It’s where the Internet Society members, chapters, and partners worldwide collaborate, innovate, and build trust. It’s where we all forge practical solutions that keep the Internet working and deliver long-lasting impact, demonstrating the power of cooperation over top-down control.

Therefore, we call on the MAG to let the IGF 2025 spotlight the power of bottom-up, multistakeholder action. Prioritize agenda space for sessions that don’t just talk about impact but demonstrate it with concrete, data-driven evidence. Show the world and the actors involved in the WSIS+20 review how this model delivers tangible benefits for people.
