TNC19 – Forging Digital Societies

The theme of this year’s TNC conference, Forging Digital Societies, is inspired by two main concepts: the idea that computer networks, by supporting human interactions, help to create and forge digital societies is combined with the innovative model of Estonia’s e-residency programme.

On Tuesday 18 June 2019, 14:00-15:30, Steve Olshansky, our Internet Technology Program Manager, will be speaking during lightning talks about Consumer IoT security and privacy frameworks, trustmarks and certifications: useful, or useless?

Questions to be addressed:

  • What is the difference between a trustmark and certification, and how do they relate to each other?
  • Are self-asserted (by manufacturers and related service providers) trustmarks valuable, or should the focus be on externally audited certification programs managed by known and trusted organizations?
  • What can actually be assessed in IoT products and related services, and what cannot?
  • What happens when products are updated – how much of a change is meaningful toward requiring a new assessment?
