Overview

Protecting privacy and personal data becomes even more essential with the expanding use of the Internet–countries around the world are responding accordingly: In Japan, laws such as Act on the Protection of Personal Information were amended this year. Meanwhile, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), to be enacted in 2018, is set to enable more control by users over their personal data.

Promoting strong, technology-neutral data-privacy laws, privacy-by-design principles, and ethical data-collection and handling principles is a key approach to protecting and fostering online privacy.

The Asia Internet Symposium in Tokyo will convene a multi-stakeholder dialogue on online privacy, with the following objectives:

  • To identify relevant and emerging online privacy issues in Japan, especially from a socio-economic context.
  • To build a common understanding among the stakeholders around their complexities, including options available to address these issues.
  • To propose concrete actions that can be taken to address the priority online privacy issues, towards fostering online trust as countries in the Asia-Pacific progress with building digital economies.
