About the Internet Society
Board of Trustees
The Internet Society is governed by a Board of Trustees. There are currently 14 trustees worldwide, including the President and CEO, who serves in an ex officio (non-voting) role.
Trustees serve the interests of the Internet Society as a whole but are typically elected or appointed by the following groups: chapters, organization members, and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). The Bylaws permit the Board of Trustees to appoint additional members.
The Role of the Board
The board provides strategic direction, oversight, inspiration, and advice in support of the Internet Society’s mission and vision. The board’s role is strictly limited to governance, ensuring the strong oversight of the organization. In consultation with the CEO, the board sets up strategic goals and helps devise a high-level strategic action plan to reach them. Once the goals and plans are approved, the board oversees management’s implementation and measures results of the actions taken in accordance with the plan.
Additionally, the board also appoints the Public Interest Registry (PIR) Board of Directors. The Internet Society Foundation is governed by a Board of Trustees composed of the current members of the Internet Society Board of Trustees.
