This OMAC Meeting explored how standards development processes factor into contemporary debates on digital sovereignty, Internet governance, and perceptions of a rapidly “fragmenting” Internet.
Using “New IP” as a case study, we discussed recent developments and trends within Internet-related standard developing organizations (SDOs), and examined whether they represent an ongoing competition for ideas and market share or matters of greater geopolitical significance.
We had a robust OMAC community discussion regarding the state of international standards development and how the Internet Society can work to ensure that SDOs contribute to a single open, globally connected Internet.
This discussion featured guest expert speakers:
- Alissa Cooper, VP of Technology Standards, Cisco; Chair, IETF
- Marco Hogewoning, Public Policy and Internet Governance Manager, RIPE NCC; and
- Andrei Robachevsky, Senior Director, Technology Programmes, Internet Society.
The event was moderated by Chris Wilson, Senior Manager, Public Policy (Internet Governance) at Amazon and OMAC Co-Chair.
