Biographie

Born in March 1955 in Tokyo. Graduated Keio University in 1979, Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science and Technology, MS for Computer Science from Keio University in 1981, Received Ph.D in Computer Science from Keio University in 1987.

Associate Professor, Faculty of Environmental Information, Keio University; Adjunct Professor at Institute of Advanced Studies, United Nations University; Instructor at Tokyo University of Art and Music; President of Japan Network Information Centre (JPNIC). General chair person of WIDE Project, a Internet research consortium in Japan. Vice chair person of Internet Society, Japanese chapter; Vice president of Internet Association, Japan.

Internet Society related works:

1992: chairman of local arrangement group of Inet*92 in Kobe; 1993-1995 a member of IAB; 1996- present, a member of IAHC.

Professional works:

1979 - 1984 Keio S&Tnet
Keio S&Tnet (Science and Technology network) was the first campus wide local area network in Japan which connects several buildings of Keio University Institute of Science and Technology campus. The hardware of the network was jointly developed with Professor Hideo Aiso and Mario Tokoro and the protocol architecture was designed and implemented by Jun Murai and his group.
1984 - 1994 JUNET
JUNET (Japan University, UNIX Network) was a first inter University network operated in Japan which connects more than 1,000 organizations at its peak time. It employs UUCP dial up technology and provides the first hierarchical domain name system in the world networks. Murai received IPSJ (Information Processing Society Japan) research award with this work.
1988 - Widely Integrated Distributed Environment (WIDE) project.
The WIDE research project initiated to archive a general mutual connectivities among every computer in the world. The process of WIDE researche has been contributing to the development of the Internet in the world. The project currently consists of 250 researchers throughout the nations and operate Internet which is the first Internet infrastructure in Japan.
1994 - Electronic Observation System
Introduction of video and image information over the computer network contributes a new and better environment for observation based researches. This research is coordinated with micro gravity researchers and biological researchers to provide them with a multi media based networking environment.
1995 - Multimedia Internet
New media such as audio, video and still images have been well supported in modern computer technology. In order to share and exchange these information, a new protocol architecture has to be defined. The purpose of research focuses on real time multi-media transmission and synchronized multiple multi-media transmissions.
1994- Satellite Internet (WISH and AI3)
The use of satellite for the Internet multicast and real-time communication with the IP protocol. The research is focused on network interface design, routing protocols, and management protocols to switch channels dynamically so that the satellite network would be properly configured. The testbed network connects 10 fixed nodes throughout the nation, as well as four Asian countries.
1996- Internet 1996 World Exposition
The Internet 1996 World Exposition is an attempt to encourage new technologies and infrastructure and promote them across the world. Murai took a role as the international executive committee member and the chairman of the Japanese committee.
1997- Mobile and Ubiquitous computing
Funded by Ministry of International Trade and Industry MITI). Cooperative research with Stanford University, SUN Microsystems, Toshiba corporation and others. Topics include mobile-IP protocols, system architecture for mobile computing, and dynamic configuration.
