I have a fairly long history of association with the Internet, since the mid 1980′s and have considerable respect for the evolution of the technology, the commitment of the technical community, and the enormous enablement and transformation in communications and information availability brought about by this medium.
I have served, and continue to serve in a number of governance and management roles relating to the Internet. I owned and operated a regional ISP in New Zealand during the 1990′s and early 2000′s. I was President of InternetNZ, the delegated ccTLD manager for .nz for 4 years, and then its CEO for another 4 years. InternetNZ was established in 1995 very much leveraging from ISOC objectives, and has a considerable commitment to furthering objectives that keep the Internet open and uncaptureable, as well as a broad outreach programme within NZ, and importantly in the Pacific Islands.
InternetNZ currently contracts me in a part time role to manage some key international relationships. I am the current vice chair of APTLD, the independent association of ccTLD managers for the Asia Pacific region.
Within ICANN I am a vice chair of the governing council of the Country Code Name Supporting Organisation (ccNSO). Also in ICANN I currently chair the ccNSO “Framework of Interpretation Working Group” which is investigating and developing a framework for use in the delegations and redelegations of ccTLDs.
Within the Internet Society, I have been a member of the Pacific Island Chapter for many years, and have established programmes enabling travel fellowships for Pacific Island techies to attend various PICISOC and PacNOG, NZNOG and other relevant events. I have also represented InternetNZ on the Internet Society Advisory Council for several years, as InternetNZ is an organisational Internet Society member. Myself and Desiree Miloshevic currently are the co-chairs of the Internet Society Advisory Council.
I convened and chaired the inaugural Pacific IGF meeting in New Caledonia in April 2011. Also, for the Asia Pacific IGF, I have served on the organising committee for the two events it has convened and continue to serve on this organising committee. I’ve participated in a large number of technical fora including IETF, IGF, WSIS, ITU, APRICOT, APAN, APIA (organiser of APRICOT) and APStar groups.
I am fully committed to the Internet Society’s core principles, and with a strong appreciation of the Internets underlying technologies, significant roles in the development of public policy in national, regional and global environments.
The Internet Society is interestingly poised for the future during its 20th year, and I would like to play a greater role in serving the Internet Society community going forwards.
