About the Position:
ISOC maintains five Regional Bureaus around the world. They are Africa, Latin America and Caribbean, Asia, North America, and Europe. The Senior Director for Global Services reporting to the Chief Operating Officer would provide global leadership and management for the Regional Bureaus to: develop and achieve internal alignment with ISOC global leadership of regional activities, requirements and expertise; help facilitate effective regional execution of public policy and technology campaigns, and economic and social development programs; help build regional alignment among the regions and with ISOC’s global public policy programs and activities; support the regions in development of chapters, membership, and sponsorship of conferences and activities; ensure that the regional staff have the support across the organization that they require to achieve their goals; and work across the regions to help create positive recognition and visibility of ISOC’s vision, mission, and values at the Regional levels.
The Regional Bureaus are integral hubs in ISOC’s work, helping to build capacity where it is needed, mobilize local support for global efforts, and develop policy and educational awareness. They serve as vital conduits, interconnecting ISOC's staff, Chapters, and Organizational and Individual members around topical regional and local issues. Bureaus are instrumental in building awareness of ISOC's commitment to regional Internet communities and understanding and addressing local issues important to Internet development.
Within a matrix management model this Senior Director will collaborate with strategic and operational personnel within ISOC in the design, prioritization, implementation, integration, and measurement of key programmes that impact the organization’s global activities, strategic initiatives and objectives. Externally, the Sr. Director will communicate ISOC’s global awareness of differing regional needs and priorities in functional areas such as policy, technology, capacity building and membership and business development. Additionally, the Sr. Director, in conjunction with the functional champions, will participate in the hiring and day to day management of personnel in the region. The Sr. Director will ensure the progress of each functional objective and consistently report and liaise with the departmental leader on key benchmarking goals in order to underpin the requirement for bi-directional communication.
Overall, the Sr. Director will help the organization expand the full complement of ISOC’s initiatives and programs in collaboration with ISOC’s Chapters, members, and partners in order to solidify the mission and principles of ISOC at the regional level. The successful candidate will work closely with the Sr. Director for Membership and Services and his staff, the Sr. Director for Resource Development, including the Directors for Grants and Foundations, and for Resource Development, and with the Sr. Director for Internet Leadership, all of whom report to the COO. The Sr. Director for Global Services would be part of the COO’s Executive Management team and would interact regularly with all other members of the executive team as well as the functional leaders in all areas.
Responsibilities:
· Working in close collaboration with the Regional Bureau Directors, oversee the effective execution of regional and ISOC strategies and objectives, prioritising and building collaboration, engagement and communication around our mission, principles and practices while keeping global issues and challenges in mind.
· Establish additional venues for policy information exchange between the appropriate stakeholders to enable ISOC’s work in technical and policy areas to be presented and discussed via local venues such as ISOC’s INET conferences, regional events, symposia and workshops and partner forums.
· Develop communications that will publicize and promote ISOC activities in line with ISOC’s mission through chapters, members, youth and partners within the regional area.
· Directly engage and communicate with key regional influencers, including expanding engagement within Arab States.
· Develop strategies and objectives in collaboration with the ISOC functional champions to effectively extend ISOC’s influence and impact.
· Increase the visibility and positive impact of ISOC’s regional events and projects.
· Own and help drive business development activities in the region, encompassing organization and individual memberships, grants and program sponsorships, working with staff leads in each area.
· Mentor, collaborate with and as relevant manage internal staff within the regions.
Desired Qualifications:
· At least ten years of management experience in building consensus within a cause based environment.
· Proven track record of working internationally, including effective liaison with multiple senior stakeholders and sensitivity to local interests and cultures. Experience in and/or working relationships with Arab State ICT community a plus.
· Hands-on experience with Internet policy and regulatory issues, development programs or educational projects in international venues.
· Expertise in one or more facets of ISOC’s key areas of focus: Internet capacity building, program funding, public policy, membership communications, or technical areas of Internet standards.
· Past involvement with the Internet community, such as IGF, ICANN, IETF, or other key stakeholders in the Internet ecosystem is considered a strong plus.
· Broad understanding of Internet-based communication and work tools, including a strong knowledge of the social media capabilities and local media influencers.
· Demonstrable ability to work in a fast-paced multi-cultural environment and interact quickly and skillfully with different internal and external constituencies.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English a must; additional languages are a plus.
· Commitment to ISOC’s organizational mission, vision and values.
· Exceptional strategic and proactive leadership, communications and management skills.
· Willingness and ability to travel extensively.
