This position is based in the Reston, Virginia office of the Internet Society. Reporting directly to the COO, the Sr. Director of Business Development and Resource Mobilization will provide leadership, management, strategic direction and coordination for the Internet Society's revenue generation programmes. These programmes are directed at enabling the organization to achieve it goals and at new account development, event funding and grant and foundation support. The Business Development and Grants and Foundations Departments are each led by a Director who will be direct reports. Externally, the Sr. Director of Business Development and Resource Mobilization will identify, cultivate, and manage relationships with corporations and other organizations to raise the funds needed for our initiatives.
The successful candidate will need to be an entrepreneur and a highly effective implementer, identifying new opportunities for programmes, campaigns and partnerships to advance ISOC’s mission. Internally, the COO will also look to this position to take the lead in developing revenue plans for the organization; in close collaboration with the Sr. Director for Membership and Services establish and implement a system for tracking and projecting revenues, and ensure the resource development goals throughout the organization can effectively be met in a manner that builds on programmes, respective staff strengths and mutual value for the Internet society and its members.
Responsibilities
- Work in close collaberation with the Sr. Director of Membership and Services to link and align organizational talents and programme assets and activities to effectively and efficiently realize the organizations’s goals.
- Provide strategic guidance and support to the directors who report to him/her as well as serving as “boots on the ground” to build annual and multi-year financial support for the mission and objectives of the Internet Society.
- Work with senior staff to conceptualize, formulate, design, implement and coordinate key revenue generating campaigns to increase the overall number of corporate sponsors and subsequent revenue.
- Work in collaboration with COO, Sr. Director of Membership and Services and other senior staff to develop annual revenue plans and goals for the organization.
- In collaboration with COO team, direct reports, and other internal stakeholders monitor progress, outcomes and expenditures of programmes established.
- Create and carry out sponsorship strategies in support of Internet Society events, INETs, ION and others, working in collaboration and support of programme leads.
- In coordination and collaboration with the Internet Society's Regional Bureau leaders take the lead to identify, investigate, and pursue fund development priorities to support key initiatives, supporting their efforts to secure necessary funding and involving senior staff as appropriate.
- Foster the optimum alignment of ongoing programmes and activities toward the organization’s goals, maximizing human resources and other assets.
- In collaboration with the Communication’s department, COO, Sr. Director for Membership and Services, and other Executive Staff, identify, target, design and execute effective outreach programmes to attract and close new corporate members across the world.
- Support the Directors of Resource Development and Grants and Foundations in their efforts to create and implement new programmatic and partnership options that will extend the organization’s efforts, visibility and reputation.
- Strategically pursue new funding opportunities that support organization’s mission and vision, including the possibility of establishing an endowment for supporting key long-term interests of the Internet Society.
Desired Qualifications
- At least fifteen years of non-profit or relevant for-profit/commercial organizational experience that demonstrates progressively responsible and demonstrable management experience in positions related to development and attainment of an organization’s revenue generation plans; guidance for highly skilled and experienced direct reports; a collaborative work style, and demonstrated success establishing credibility with potential partners.
- Strong leadership skills, including demonstrated ability working with senior management from diverse cultures and organizations.
- Significant management experience in leading and shaping new customer acquisition programmes and partner arrangements.
- Strong track record in revenue generation via corporate sponsors, fundraising and partner relations.
- Demonstrated ability to work with strategic clarity and tactical flexibility with different constituencies, including staff peers, partners, regional bureau representatives, donors and other stakeholders.
- Proven strategist with persistent focus on mission, effectiveness, outcomes and organizational advantage.
- Experience with grants and foundation funding.
- Experience with endowment development a plus.
- Commitment to organization’s mission, values and plans for growth.
- Accomplishments that reflect teamwork, integrity and accountability. Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced environment and deliver quality results in a growing organization.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Additional languages very desirable.

- Persuasive, well-organized, and compelling presenter with the confidence and polish to present to an executive level audience across to peers and other internal and external constituencies.
