As the Internet evolves, so too do the challenges for businesses. Most end-users perceive Internet evolution merely as changes and updates to the software and networked applications with which they are familiar, or as the arrival of faster, more user friendly devices and applications that change the way they communicate, do business, entertain themselves, and so on.

Balancing end-user expectations, increasing attention from governments, and a drive for greater share-holder value poses particular new challenges for the companies that do business in the Internet space.

The Business Roundtable will be for industry representatives only and provide a venue and opportunity for those gathered to exchange views on key issues of their choosing. These might include:

  • Balancing business interests in data collection and privacy concerns
  • Enhancing the security of the network and communications over the network
  • With global reliance on broadband, including mobile, important principles and frameworks, such as the OECD principles and the IC Trade principles, to ensure transborder data flow, innovation and investment
  • Addressing bad actors and protection of intellectual property rights in the online environment
  • Enabling efficient governance of the Internet while respecting its multi-stakeholder nature
  • Understanding the role that businesses will continue to play in the “governance” of the Internet vis-à-vis other stakeholders

As a prelude to Global INET 2012, the Internet Society is convening a Business Roundtable to pursue business-specific concerns about the future of the Internet. We expect participation by a cross-section of businesses in the Internet space – operators, suppliers, browsers, content providers, users. This will be a facilitated session in which all will be invited to participate, as well as to suggest in advance which issues and developments are most likely to challenge their business models and, perhaps, the future of the Internet. We would appreciate a prior indication of your interest to participate so that we can be certain to accommodate all who are interested.

Imagining the Future Internet: Collaborative Leadership Exchange

http://www.internetsociety.org/clx

Sunday 22 April 2012 -- 09:30 to 17:00

To get from today’s Internet to the Internet we imagine, we will all need to lead —but what does leadership mean in the Internet realm?

At this prelude to Global INET we will meet and work with others who want to take a more active role in building a stronger, more vibrant Internet, collaborating with them to explore:

  • How we can lead from the grassroots
  • What unique traits of leadership the Internet requires
  • How to identify our own leadership styles and build on them
  • What steps we can take to strengthen our leadership skills

We will also think collectively about whether there are critical but “hidden” issues for the future of the Internet and how we can bring them into the light.

The process will forge genuine connections between participants who share interests and create dialogue around those interests

The Collaborative Leadership Exchange will be the ideal warm up for Global INET. We will take an interactive, multi-stakeholder approach to these explorations, using a less formal approach (the “unconference format) that is known to yield results for participants.

You’ll arrive at Global INET primed to play a more active role. Having made connections at the Exchange with people from all over the world who have goals and challenges similar to yours, you’ll be able to deepen those relationships during INET.

What Will the Day Look Like?

No panels, no plenaries, no fixed seating.

The Leadership Exchange will employ collaborative facilitation, with an agenda and session topics developed by you and other participants in the time leading up to and during the event. The Exchange will address your specific concerns and issues and those of other participants, and will provide an interactive environment in which to engage with other passionate leaders.

You will form and strengthen relationships that will support you in the role or roles you choose to play in shaping the future Internet.

What Should You Expect?

You can expect lots of deep, personally relevant discussions around global, national, and local issues relating to Internet leadership—including topics that won’t be addressed at the Global INET, or different angles on topics that the INET will address. While it’s impossible to predict what topics will be chosen through collaboration, some possibilities might be:

  • How is leadership and decision-making on Internet issues different from leadership in the physical realm?
  • What are local considerations for application of the Core Values and Principles that made the Internet what it is today?
  • How do we get leaders at all levels engaged?

Why Attend the Collaborative Leadership Exchange?

Because:

  • It will be fun, exciting, productive—and a little unexpected
  • There will be an incredible diversity of sessions—including those proposed by participants like you.
  • You will meet people who care about subjects that you care about.
  • After the INET, you will feel empowered to reconnect with Collaborative Leadership Exchange colleagues regarding your common interests.
  • The Internet needs your leadership to shape its future.

So join us, in Geneva, on 22 April 2012, the Sunday before Global INET, and take a step towards Internet leadership for tomorrow.
