G20 Consumer Summit 2018

On 15-16 May 2018, Consumers International co-hosted, along with the Argentinian National Directorate for Consumer Protection, the second annual G20 Consumer Summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was the first G20 Summit to be hosted in South America.

The 2018 G20 Consumer Summit brought together an international audience of senior government representatives, consumer leaders, and international business to discuss a range of consumer issues relating to the safety of children’s Internet-connected products, emerging challenges in product safety, and food waste.

A major theme for 2018 was the safety of connected products and services for children.

On 15 May, Raúl Echeberría spoke on an expert panel — “What Works? Responses from Regulators & Standard Setters”.

This session looked at what regulators and standard-setters are already doing to improve data protection and security of children’s connected products and services and what more can be done in the future. Are specific rules needed to protect children online in this area? Can or should regulators step in to create some coherence amid the plethora of guidelines and industry standards? How can regulations or standards be developed at a pace that works for children in the digital economy? What needs to happen to ensure they are flexible enough to remain relevant in the future?
