Next generation Internet in Myanmar | World Economic Forum (forumblog)

Internet Development on Scoop.it! - 7 Junio 2013 - 5:37pm

7 June 2013 | The last time I visited Myanmar was before the reforms started. At that time, I had a bit of a struggle connecting to the Internet, and access was slow and intermittent at best, even in what I was told was Yangon’s finest hotel. As I return to Myanmar this week, I had a quick look at what the current statistics say, and while they are slightly out of date, I noted that estimates of Internet penetration hover around the 1% mark.

Jane Coffin's insight:

Blog from Rajnesh (Raj) Singh who recently spoke and participated the WEF in Myanmar this week.  What technical, human, and governance infrastructures will Myanmar take to shift change and develop Internet infrastructure and become a bigger player in ASEAN?

If it works in Africa, it'll work anywhere: Kenya's hard-as-nails BRCK modem ... - | ZDNet

Internet Development on Scoop.it! - 30 Mayo 2013 - 9:34pm

30 May 2013 | BRCK, the 'backup generator to the internet'.

Ushahidi, the Kenyan not-for-profit organisation behind the development of the BRCK communications device, hopes that its success in raising funds through Kickstarter to develop the product will help to spur more hardware innovation in Kenya and other parts of Africa.

The BRCK, which Ushahidi describes as a backup generator for the internet, is a rugged modem and wireless access point that can connect to the internet via Ethernet, wi-fi, and 3G or 4G mobile networks. The BRCK can hop from one network to another and switch from mains power to battery power as required. It can also be accessed remotely to check how the wi-fi and electricity are performing, and alerts and notifications — such as reminders when the BRCK is low on power — can also be configured by smartphone or PC.
