Two recent recipients of Internet Society (ISOC) Community Grants recently attended the PacINET conference in Suva, Fiji in November 2012. From Left to Right, Bruce Baikie, Emani Fakaotimanava-Lui, and Laura Hosman are pictured below, at the conference.

This project has started by the Fundamental Scientific Library (FSL) on November 2011, and the main goal of the project was to start digitization of 13 peer-reviewed academic journals of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia. The journals are: Astrophysics, Reports of the National Academy of Sciences, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences – Earth Sciences, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences – Mathematics, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences – Mechanics, Reports of the National Academy of Sciences–Technical Sciences, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences – Physics, The Bulletin of Social Sciences, Medical Science of Armenia, Biological Journal of Armenia, Chemical Journal of Armenia, Historical and Philological Journal, Neurochemistry.

St Louis College Cisco Networking Academy situated in Jos metropolis in Central Nigeria,  is a peculiar one as it is the first academy set up in a secondary school.  Another remarkable thing about it is that it is an all-girls school. The programme started in 2003 with 25 girls and has graduated girls every year after that with a current number of 160 girls to graduate this year. Over the years, there has been a dire need to improve the infrastructure in the school to match the rise in the number of students.

Cyber Espace de B​oulkassoumbougou

An innovative, solar-powered turnkey Computer-Lab-in-a-Box and a long-distance, solar-powered wireless internet connection were set up at a primary school on the island of Udot within Chuuk, one of the Federated States of Micronesia, in early August 2012. The system was installed by members of the Pacific Island Schools Connectivity, Education, and Solar (PISCES) Project, with assistance from numerous local community members. This technology deployment provided an in-field training opportunity for the PISCES project, which is a multi-partnered endeavor emphasizing hands-on training in solar-powered technology for Pacific Islanders.

Thanks in part to funding from an Internet Society Community Grant, a three-day workshop in solar-powered wireless Internet connectivity was held at the University of Guam from July 31 to August 2, 2012, establishing one of Micronesia’s first solar-powered long-distance point-to-point WiFi connections on the university’s campus. This workshop comprised the first half of the Pacific Island Schools Connectivity, Education, and Solar (PISCES) Project, a multi-partnered endeavor focused on training and local capacity building vis-à-vis solar-powered information and communications technology (ICT) within the Pacific region.

The Uganda Internet exchange point (UIXP) has completed a major upgrade that has seen its network transform from the traditional 'Layer 2' exchange to 'Layer 3', thanks to a community grant from Internet society and a Jon Postel Award. This development will greatly enhance the IXPs efforts to scale and offer more options and stability to the peers

The project was started in January 2012 with the installation of a power back up system. This involved decommision the ageing 800va inverter + 100ah battery that had served for over 10 years to a new 3kva and two100ah batteries. This saw the UIXP go 6 months without any power outage (despite the frequent power cuts) and thus paving way for installation of more equipement.

In order to be succesful today, you need to be educated. So, to meet growing demand on education, it is important to develop distans education tools. With kind support from ISOC grants programm, now we can do this job and offer new, localized E-learning system to our internet society in Georgia. The system is based on open-souce instrument, Moodle. We have translated its interface into Georgian language and still working on development of this system. Hope to represent completed system in few months.

With the depletion of IPv4 addresses the transfer to IPv6 addresses is of primary importance. Academic Scientific Research Computer Network of Armenia (ASNET-AM) has started IPv6 deployment in the mid 2011. Now with the help of ISOC Community Grants Programme we have forced IPv6 deployment both on hardware and software levels.

Deployment of IPv6 in several parts of ASNET-AM network infrastructure is now in progress.
It will serve as a basis for further process of complete transition to IPv6 within ASNET-AM network.
